Puerto Iguazu has a rich and diverse eco-system. A humid subtropical region, it receives abundant rainfall all year round. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures generally touching 20º C to 33º C and often soaring above 40°C (104°F). Winters are pleasant with temperatures in Puerto Iguazu plummeting to 0°C (32°F) at times.
Puerto Iguazu is usually wet. Every month, the region receives over 3.9 inches (100mm) of rainfall. November is the wettest month, with an average rainfall of 7.9 inches (200mm). Precipitation is heavy and unmitigated in this region due to regular convective storms. An interesting facet of the high degree of humidity here is its resultant effect on temperatures - rainfall decreases the thermal amplitude and in turn causes clouds to swell.
A crucial reason for Puerto Iguazu's overwhelming canopy of rainforests is its soil. Located in a rocky plateau rich in decomposed melaphyre and iron, the area has an unusually red land. Also, its many rocky cliffs sheathed with humus foster the growth of lush vegetation. This unmatched subtropical rainforest has over 2000 varieties of plants, including pink ferns, orchids and many other fascinating species.
This grand natural reserve is also home to a great variety of fauna - multihued butterflies, insects and many animals; thus making Puerto Iguazu one of the richest biomes on the planet.
