Transportation in Puerto Iguazu

Puerto Iguazu and Iguacu Falls are located at the northern end of the Misiones province bordering Brazil and Paraguay resulting in a lot of vehicles passing through. It is connected to Foz do Iguaçu and Iguacu Falls in Brazil through the Tancredo Neves International Bridge, where the Argentinean National Route 12 becomes the Brazilian route BR-469. Traffic on the water route linked to Port Meira in Brazil is also heavy. Efforts have been made to promote train travel but have not had much success. The city is served by the Iguazu International Airport, located at a distance of 17 km from the city.

Getting to Puerto Iguazu

Puerto Iguazu's international airport Aeropuerto Internacional Cataratas del Iguazú (IATA: IGR and ICAO: SARI) is situated to the southeast, some 20 km (12.5mi) away. The airport receives six flights per day, which fly from Buenos Aires. These include the Southern Winds, American Falcon and Aerolíneas Argentinas. There are regular taxi and bus services from the airport, as well as daily pick-ups from Puerto Iguazu hotels for tourists. Most bus services from the airport terminate at the two bus stations, Misiones and Avs Córdoba.

By Bus

The central bus stations, Av Misiones and Av Córdoba offer bus services to the following areas - Buenos Aires Retiro Bus Station(‘Expreso Singer SA', 'Expreso Tigre iguazù', 'Crucero del Norte' and 'Via Bariloche'), a 20-hour journey; Mendosa; the provincial capital of Posadas (5.5 hours); Salta (Andesmar) and Corobda (Mercobus and Cruzero del Norte). Buses also operate to and from the neighbouring cities of Foz do Iguaçu, in Brazil (visas required) and Ciudad del Este, in Paraguay, (no requirement of visa) and also to the Parque Nacional Iguazú (Iguazu National Park).

Travellers can either book their tickets at the respective bus company offices or book online. Those going on overnight journeys can opt for the semi cama buses (buses with reclining seats) or cama, which is more of a bed. The 20 hour (1200 km) bus journey from Buenos Aires to Iguazu will cost around 132 pesos for cama seats.

Getting Around Puerto Iguazu

By Taxi

The Asociación de Trabajadores de Taxis (tel: 420 282) offers taxis for the whole day to tourists. However taxi services usually have fixed rates with the driver will waiting for his passenger at all stops. So the distance becomes irrelevant if you are using taxis. A trip anywhere from Puerto Iguazu to the National Park will cost roughly 60 AR$ while round trips, though often advertised as double the cost, are mostly charged around 100 AR$.

By Car

Though much of the city can be seen on foot, there are car services available from the airport itself. Tourists can also use the Budget on Paulino Amarante 76, (telephone: 03757 - 421675) service for more information on car hire. It is advisable to travel to the Iguacu Falls, on RN (Argentine National Highway) 12.

By Ferry

Look for the ferry service signboard somewhere in the corner on Av. Missiones and Brazil. For an hour each day the ferry to Paraguay charges foot passengers 6 pesos. On the Paraguayan side you will need to walk up to the main street, hop on to a bus and pay 2 pesos for a ride.

By Bus

Twice every hour buses leave the bus terminals of Avs Córdoba and Misiones to ferry passengers to the entrance of the Iguacu Falls on the Argentine side. This ride will cost aorund 4 pesos. Timetables of bus services are available at all hotels. There are half hourly departures for the Brazilian side of the falls. All bus services operate between 07:15 - 20:15.

Eleven buses travel each day to the Paraguayan city of Ciudad del Este while along Ruta National 12 to the San Ignacio Mini and Posadas there are hourly services.
