The Monumental Lighting of the Itaipu is a show of sounds and lights, transforming every detail of the concrete Itaipu Plant into a Cathedral-like monument!
This show was first introduced on Dec 6th 2002. To encourage tourism, the central plant has gone through reforms; It has received a PA system and projection screens for displaying a 6 minute-long film about the construction of Itaipu. The concrete barrier of the dam has a lighting system that uses 519 reflectors connected by more than 60 km of wires, cables and conduits. The energy used to illuminate the Itaipu during this show is enough to supply a city of 15 thousand inhabitants.
The lighting of the dam is complete with the lighting of the new plastic panel of the dam located next to the Belvedere Centre. This panel, decorated by Poty Lazarrotto is lit from both sides, emphasizing the traits of Poty.
The Monumental Lighting of Itaipu is the first step in a larger project that also involves the lighting of the spillway. The designer of this lighting project is one of the best lighting specialists in Brazil, Peter Gasper, who is also responsible for the lighting of the Latin American Memorial, the Cathedral of Brasilia; the Alvorada Palace and the Imperial Museum. Not only tourists, but the community itself comes to attend this spectacle provided by the reflectors that illuminate the dam and the soundtrack that was created by music director Antonio Fava. The music makes this show unique and unparalleled.
