Bela Vista Biological Refuge is a permanent preservation area, set up with the objectives to protect flora and fauna, research, rehabilitation of degraded areas, landscaping, breeding of animals, environmental education, seedling production and water supply for the city of Foz do Iguaçu.
The program was initiated in 1977 when it was used to shelter the animals when the river Paraná was in spate. During the formation of the lake in 1982, many animals were rescued in the operation known as "Mymba Kuera". Some of them were given to research institutions and others were released in biological reserves and refuges.
In 2002, the shelter has experienced revitalization, based on the concepts of green architecture and energy efficiency, transforming it into a tool for environmental education and a tourist attraction. It includes 23 new buildings.
